Skill Level: Easy

Materials:

5mm crochet hook (H) Worsted weight (4) yarn of your choice

Abbreviations:

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

sl st = slip stitch

ch = chain

rnd = round

Notes:

This pattern is worked in rounds. Chain 2 in beginning of rounds do not count as 1st hdc throughout the pattern. * indicates repeat instructions inside around.

Pattern:

Rnd 1 - Start with a magic circle, ch 2, work 11 hdc into the circle. Pull the circle closed and sl st to the top of the ch 2. Rnd 2 - ch 2 *(2 hdc, 1 hdc)* sl st to the top of the ch 2 (18)

Rnd 3 - ch 2 *(2 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc)* sl st to the top of the ch 2 (24) Rnd 4 - ch 2 *(2 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc)* sl st to the top of the ch 2 (30)

At this point the correct newborn sizing should meansure 4 inches in diameter. You can add an additional round to increase for correct measurement or if you'd like to create a larger hat. The additional rounds follow the same pattern as the previous 3 rounds, starting with:

Additional Rnd: ch 2 *(2 hdc, and increasing 1 hdc from the previous round)* sl st to the top of ch 2

Rnd 5 - Rnd 8 - ch 2, 1 hdc in each stitch around, slp st to the top of the ch 2

Rnd 9 - ch 2, 1 dc in each stitch around, slp st to the top of the ch 2 Rnd 10 - Rnd 11 - ch 2 *(fpdc in the first stitch, bpdc in the next) repeat around* slp st to the top of the ch 2

Measure the length at this point. A newborn hat should be between 4.5 and 5 inches in length. (11.43 - 12.7 cm) Tie off

Ears (make 2):

Rnd 1 - Start with a magic circle, ch 1. Work 8 hdc stitches, do not join, work in the round. (8)

Rnd 2 - 2 hdc in each st (16) Rnd 3 - 1 hdc in the next 14 stitches. ch 1 turn (14) Rnd 4 - (1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts) hdc decrease twice (1 hdc in the next 5 sts) Tie off.

Sew on ears Weave in all ends.
