Crochet Mixed Cluster Blanket

I promise you this pattern will not disappoint! I managed to work through this quick throw while I was babysitting my nephew and niece! I'm almost embarrassed to tell you how simple this pattern is because you are only repeating 2 rows (and one of them is SC across!) and swapping out colour. But the result looks so elegant! People will think you spent weeks working away on it :). Honestly, those a the best patterns. If you are looking for something along the same lines but slightly different (but equally easy) check out my Easy Peasy Crochet Blanket.

Enjoy and send me pics as you work it up! I would love to see how yours turns out.

Materials:

  • Medium weight yarn - this patten used Red Heart Soft and 3-4 skeins of each colour (if using 2 colour stripes) in White and Grey

  • Crochet hook size H (5.50mm)

  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

Ch = Chain(s)

Sc = Single crochet

Dc: Double crochet

YO: Yarn over

SK: Skip

Pattern Notes:

The pattern measures approximately 42"x52" but can easily be adjusted +/- with multiple of 3 stitches. Just be mindful of the gauge! (Tension: 17 stitches, 23 rows to 10cm/4").

The Mixed Cluster stitch is created over two rows and the pattern design comes together by swapping out colours in 2 row increments. The colour pattern I used is listed below but you can change up the colour format as you wish!

Pattern:

CH 81,

Row 1: In the second chain from the hook SC. SC in each chain across the row. (80 sc)

Row 2: CH 2 and turn. In the first stitch YO *and insert your hook, YO and pull through, YO and pull through only 2 loops. YO and SK the next stitch. In the next stitch, insert your hook, YO and pull through, YO and pull through 1 loop. YO, insert your hook into the same stitch, YO and pull through, YO and pull through 1 loop. YO and pull through all 6 loops on your hook. Ch 1. Mixed Cluster completed. In the same space that you ended repeat from * and work mixed cluster across to the end of the row. On the last mixed cluster, in the last stitch of the row, omit the ch 1 to close up the mixed cluster and work a DC instead pulling through - change colour at this point before you finish the stitch.

I started one from a YouTube video made by Daisy farm. You have to check the gauge. Were you using the same yarn she used?

Blanket is gorgeous

I thought the same thing with the chains! Even following the Gauge, 81 chains didn't even come close to 42". I had to chain 150 to get a 42" length. So that does need to be clarified for other users wanting to do this blanket. Other than that, it's a beautiful pattern, just what I was looking for :)

I think you need to seriously review this pattern for future users. I made it using a starting chain of 81 as per your instructions. There’s no way you can get 42” from 81 chain. Should it be 181? My blanket measured 23” wide with 81 chain. I was making a basinette sized baby blanket so the size is ok. If you do the maths, with your stitch count, in order to achieve 42“ width you need a starting chain of about 181. This made a very dense fabric and will be a nice warm blanket.

I decided to have another go at this pattern and as I’m a fairly experienced crocheter I hoped to figure it out. The changes I made are as follows: at the end of row 2 where the pattern says to omit the chain 1 and instead work a DC, I worked the chain 1 as well as the DC into the last stitch. Then on the return row 1 of SC, I worked a SC into the top of the DC at the end of row 1 as well as a SC into the top of the CH 2 at the start of row 1. This way my stitch count remains the same throughout and I can now make a…

I’ve just had a try of this pattern with fewer stitches (starting chain of 21). I’m having trouble with it as I end up with fewer stitches at the end of Row 2 than I started with. I’ve tried it twice with the same result. It looks like a nice pattern and I’d love to make a blanket using it. A YouTube tutorial would be useful, then I could see where I’m going wrong.
